trump signs bill

A defense bill that includes reimbursement of $700 million to Pakistan has been endorsed by US president Donald trump for its support in curbing terrorism in Afghanistan.  Donald trump signed bill on Tuesday and also, in the bill additional spending on missile system was authorized to deter the nuclear threats from North Korea.

National defense authorization act 2018 was passed and it allowed a sum of $700 million to Pakistan in the name of Coalition support fund. However,  half amount has been held back and will be furnished subject to certification from the defense secretary who is supposed to acknowledge Pakistan’s efforts in the best interest of their mutual understanding especially for eradicating Haqqani network.

So far, US defense secretaries on two consecutive occasions have denied awarding the certification and therefore, the amount in budget allocated to Pakistan has yet not been furnished.

The incumbent, Mattis of US defense has also, yet to decide his stance. Congress already  has put restrictions on the said bill. Proper monitoring and evaluation of the entire support program needs to be supervised by the pentagon to verify if the assistance is being used to support militancy, otherwise. Previous bill, demanded prevention of Haqqani network and lashkar-e-Taiba to use Pakistani soil and also, to refrain them by all means to raise funds or induct and influence people in their cadres.

In the joint version of national defense authorization act, by House of Representatives and Senate, Lashkar-e-Taiba was omitted and utmost focus was demanded on Haqqani network. It clearly exhibited that if Pakistan supports US interest at large, they will flex the tight bounds, which can extensively influence Pakistan and India dispute.

The act also demands restriction on the movement of militants across borders in Afghanistan and strong efforts should be made to act against all imperative operatives involved from Haqqani network.  National defense authorization act, 2018 (NDAA) has shared their reservation on the killing of various people belonging to political and religious groups in Pakistan and government shall not use any fund provided to suppress minorities, like Hazaras, Hindus, Christians, Ahmadis, Baloch and Sindhis.
