First Unit of Neelum Jhelum to Start Power Production by Feb 2018


First Unit of Neelum JhelumThe Neelum Jhelum hydroelectric power project has been progressing at a fast pace towards its completion. The first unit of Neelum Jhelum is scheduled to start electricity generation commissioning from February 2018.

Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Chairman Lieutenant General (Retired) Muzammil Hussain was briefed about the progress in a meeting. Meeting was attended by the Board Chairman Peter Mason and other members.

The Wapda chairman expressed satisfaction over the progress of the hydroelectric project. He said that despite the delays in the project as well as the cost overrun, the project would surface out successfully due to the unconditional commitment and professional excellence from the part of Wapda and project team members.

He appreciated the team and directed the project management to keep continuing the work with the same enthusiasm in order to meet the deadline.

The brief of the meeting disclosed that the water filling in reservoir will begin in October, the waterway system which would divert water from the dam through tunnels to the power house would be completed by December. Pressurizing of the waterway system would start in January 2018 while wet testing and commissioning of power generating units would commence in February 2018.

Comprising of four generating units the Neelum Jhelum hydroelectric power project have cumulative capacity of 969 megawatts.

The first unit of Neelum Jhelum will start electricity generation by February 2018, the second unit in mid-March 2018 whereas the third and fourth units will be completed in April 2018.

The project will contribute about five billion units of electricity to the national grid every year on its completion. Annual revenue generation from the project is estimated to be Rs 45 billion.
