Sindh High Court Imposes a Hold on Issuance of New LDI Licenses

Pakistan News: Sindh High Court has prevented the federal government of Pakistan from issuing Long Distance and International (LDI Licenses) under the outdated telecom policy, which stated that anybody could obtain such licences just by a prescribed payment of $500,000.

After the expiry of the telecom policy in 2008, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) cannot issue a notification for issuing LDI licenses under the shadow of this outdated policy. Private telecom companies namely Telecard Limited, Redtone Telecommunications and Multinet Pakistan who filed a petition against PTA also argued that a valuable asset of the country was being sold at throwaway prices which could affect the national treasury of the country negatively.

The stay order issued by Justice Nadeem Akhtar would also blow the efforts of CMPak to obtain a LDI license, which is the only cellular operator without an LDI license in Pakistan.
